In Rwanda: Misuse of public funds reduced to 2.04 billion

This Tuesday, the Auditor General of Rwanda, Alexis Kamuhire, presented to Parliament, both chambers, the report of the Office of the Auditor General of Rwanda for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2024.


He highlighted some of the changes that have been observed, including a reduction in the misuse of government funds. This is after an audit was conducted in 239 institutions.


The Auditor General's report for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2024 showed that public funds misused decreased to 2.04 billion Rwf in 2024, from 2.57 billion Rwf.


This report specifically highlights the management and use of national resources in various government institutions.


The Auditor General of Rwanda says that the government has recovered 3.3 billion Rwf out of the 3.4 billion Rwf that was embezzled and was due to be recovered in the 2023/2024 fiscal year.


Agencies including WASAC, MINICOM, RURA and REB are prioritized in recovering embezzled funds, as the report confirms.


The audited government spending rate is estimated at 96.1%, equivalent to 6,571 billion Rwf.


Alexis Kamuhire said that 94% of government agencies and institutions received good grades in audits conducted in the fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2024.


Government agencies and institutions that received clean reports in compliance with laws and regulations increased to 75% from 69%.


It is also at a time when the efficiency of government investment has increased, with institutions receiving "No Defects" reaching 66% in 2024 from 59% in 2023, while the implementation of recommendations from the Auditor General of Rwanda has increased to 60% from 59%.
